Community leaders recognized in Beckley

BECKLEY - The University of Charleston at Beckley honors five community leaders to its hall of achievement

Five new members are recognized during induction ceremonies tonight on the Beckley campus, Dan Bickey, Sherrie Hunter, Linda Sumner, Mona Wiseman and Frank Wood are enshrined for their contributions to the Beckley community. School officials say the inductees are chosen for their tireless efforts in giving support to the university and to the greater Beckley area. Two of the honorees tell Newswatch this recognition tops the list for all of their lifetime achievements.

Recipient Sherrie Hunter says, "I am typically not speechless but this kind of rendered speechless, it's an immense award and I'm so humbled by it."

Linda Sumner said, "To be chosen by your peers, to be in the hall of achievement is, there are just so many other people that deserve it and to be chosen is quite an honor."

The first awards were given in 1996 and the hall consists of more than 50 honorees.
