BECKLEY - Every year in early October the annual pet blessing takes place in honor of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals.
The ceremony took place at the park on Neville Street in Beckley on Sunday. Any animals were allowed, not just cats and dogs. Rev. Jon White of St. Stephen's Church and Rev. Wanda Childs of St. Luke gathered to perform the blessing. They say it was best to have the ceremony at a neutral site.
"We're doing it together with St. Luke's Church so our two churches are coming together and we wanted a spot that wasn't either of our places but somewhere out in our community and so we thought the park here in the middle of town would be a great spot, it's a central gathering place, so that's why we came out here today," said Rev. White.
The ceremony was free to attend and the pets received a bag full of treats.
