CHARLESTON - WorkForce West Virginia asked federal workers furloughed by the partial government shutdown to hold off on filing for unemployment benefits.
A posting on the agency's website encouraged federal workers to wait until next week to file their claims because it's not clear how long the shutdown will last. The agency said it will backdate claims up to 21 days after a worker was laid off.
WorkForce estimated there are 23,000 federal employees in West Virginia, but many may be deemed essential. The agency increased it's staff to process an expected rise in claims next week.
