Mother bear and cubs rescued in residential area

BECKLEY - The Beckley Police Department and the WV DNR rescue a Mother bear and two cubs.

The 150-pound mother bear and her cubs were spotted in a brushy lot at 8:45am Monday by an off duty officer in the middle of a residential area on Massey and Russell Streets in Beckley.

The Beckley Police and WV DNR Fish and Wildlife led the effort to capture the bears by setting up a safe perimeter.About an hour after being spotted, officers were able to tranquilize all three bears in the lot and around the base of a large tree.

The Mother and her cubs were checked for injuries and determined to be unharmed, were they were then loaded into an enclosed drum and transported to a safe location to be released back into the wild.
