CHARLESTON - A panel established by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin recommended increased tolls on the West Virginia Turnpike to finance up to a billion dollars in bonds for highway projects.
The Blue Ribbon Commission on Highways finalized it's recommendation Thursday. Supporters of the plan said the increased tolls pass along the cost of road maintenance to out-of-state travelers. The commission said increased tolls for the next 30 years could generate up to a billion dollars, and by selling those bonds the state could use that money right away.
The plan needs approval from Tomblin and the Legislature before it's enacted.
