BECKLEY - On the 12th anniversary of the attacks on our country, the Raleigh County Community gathered in Beckley to remember the thousands of lives lost.
Law enforcement officers and community members gathered around the 9/11 Memorial in Uptown to reflect on the day that changed America forever. The group sang, prayed, and gave thanks to first responders whose heroic actions will never be forgotten.
Sgt. M.K. Summers with the West Virginia State Police told Newswatch how he remembered that day.
"Wasn't sure at that point what was going on or what was going to happen," Summers said, "The class was immediately haulted. We went in to try to listen to the news to find out more about it, to find out what the colonel and Governor had in plan for us."
Middle schoolers from St. Francis de Sales, who were either too young to remember September 11, 2001, or who weren't born yet, also joined the group to sing "God Bless America."
