OAK HILL - If you are a grandparent then you should be celebrating Sunday because it is National Grandparent's Day.
The national holiday was founded by Oak Hill's Marian McQuade. She attended the Oak Hill Baptist Church and wanted to recognize the lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap into the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
"I love grandparent's day because it is so special and I had Marian McQuade in my Sunday school bible class when Marion and Joe were both living and they were in class. It was a wonderful thing that she did for us grandparents so we can be noticed now," said Betty Stinette-Burgess of Oak Hill.
President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparent's Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
