Officials prepare for Summersville Lake annual drawdown

SUMMERSVILLE – Whitewater rafting enthusiasts have a longer season to look forward to at the Gauley River.

The annual drawdown on Summersville Lake begins Friday and continues through mid-October. An additional two weekends will be spent for further draw-downs this year for maintenance.

The drawdown prevents flooding downstream during the winter, in addition to bringing forth optimal rafting flows, according to Park Manager Toby Wood of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Summersville Lake. “We're releasing the water from the dam [and] we're generating power with that,” explained Wood. “And then to be able to provide this recreation benefit, it's good for our area and good for West Virginia.”

In order to draw Summersville Lake down below Winter Pool to facilitate gate inspections in November 2013, Wood said the Corps expects to conduct additional releases during mid-week of the last two weeks of September and the first week of October. The expected flows for September 17, 24 and October 1 are 2,800 cubic feet per second (cfs). The expected flows of September 18, 19, 25 and 26 and October 2 and 3 are 5,000 cfs.
