BECKLEY - Dozens of law enforcement officers and motorcyclists gathered in Beckley Saturday to remember a fallen officer.
Members of the Beckley Police Department escorted cyclists for the Fifth Annual Chuck Smith Memorial Ride, which has been held almost every year since his death.
"It's a brotherhood, and you got to have each other's back when you're out doing the job, and so we try to do things together when we're working," Beckley Police Chief Tim Deems told WOAY.
Det. Smith was killed while working undercover for the Beckley Police Department's Narcotics Unit. His friends and family organize the ride to honor his service and sacrifice.
"It's nothing that needs to ever be forgotten by the citizens or the department," officer Jeremy Young said. "It will keep the officers ever vigilant, and it will also remind the citizens every year the dangers and sacrifices the officers are willing to make for them."
The group was set for a stop at Smith's grave in blueridge before a four hour trip to Pineville and back.
