ACLU filed lawsuit against state Division of Corrections

CHARLESTON - The American Civil Liberties Union's West Virginia chapter said the Division of Corrections isn't protecting the privacy of inmates' medical information.

The lawsuit alleges that a correctional officer at the Beckley Correction Center told other officers and inmates that one prisoner had HIV.  That inmate was allegedly harassed by officers and other inmates.  The ACLU filed the lawsuit earlier this month in Kanawha County Circuit Court on behalf of the inmate only identified as "John Doe."

Corrections Commissioner Jim Rubenstein said all employees are adequately trained regarding confidentiality matters.
