Library drops fines in exchange for reading time

BECKLEY - Children who've racked up fines for their overdue library books are in luck this month.

The Raleigh County Public Library began their "Read Down Their Fines" program Monday to help kids pay back money they owe.

For every 10 minutes a child reads to library staff, parents or themselves, one dollar will be removed from their balance. Librarians hope it will promote both reading and responsibility in young Raleigh County residents.

"We're always, you know, willing to try something for the kids, and we thought that this would just be an opportunity for them to come in and be able to maybe read for five minutes or ten minutes," Nellie Smith told WOAY.

The library is also accepting pet supplies for the Raleigh County Humane Society.
