BECKLEY - If you have a nasty habit of driving through red lights, you may want to think twice!
Starting Friday, local law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on folks who run red lights, as part of the Target Red campaign headed by the Governor's Highway Safety Program. Additional officers will take to the streets and step up their enforcement.
Lieutenant Jeffrey McPeake of the Beckley Police Department said most traffic fatalities are the result of running through red lights. "The most dangerous traffic crash is a side impact crash where the driver pulls out and someone hits him right in the driver's door," he explained. "There's so little protection there that often times those can become fatal."
Your car needs to be clear of the intersection before the light turns red, according to state code. The Target Red campaign runs through August 17.
