Raleigh County authorities are releasing the name of a young man shot to death in Beckley Tuesday afternoon.

Beckley Police said 20-year-old Darien M. Blaney of Beckley was fatally shot in the chest. Police arrested 19-year-old Gaston Smith III of Cannaday Street for first-degree murder.

"It does come to decision making, and obviously it wasn't a wise decision that he did make," Det. William Pannell told Newswatch. "There are other avenues that they can take instead of resorting to violence."

The shooting happened at the intersection of Mullberry and Cannaday streets around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said neighbors reported a verbal altercation between the two, who were acquantinces.

Blaney underwent surgery yesterday evening before he died.

"I'm surprised and shocked clear out of my bones," neighbor Michael Rhodes said. "I ain't hear nothing or see nothing. I ain't even see nobody say nothing to me."

A weapon was not recovered at the crime scene.
