UPDATE: Two escaped inmates back in custody

UPDATE: 7/29/13 Police have located two inmates who escaped from prison in Pocahontas County early Sunday morning.

Sergeant Michael Baylous says 40-year-old Thomas Pennington of Kanawha County and 48-year-old Larry Morehead of Nicholas County were captured Monday morning in the Richwood area of Nicholas County. 

The two escaped from medium security Denmar Correctional Facility Sunday around 1:30 a-m, where Warden Mark Williamson says he believes they scaled a chain link fence in the rear of the facility. 

Baylous says Pennington was serving a sentence for murder and sexual assault, and Morehead was also serving a sentence for sexual assault. 


HILLSBORO - West Virginia State Police are searching for two inmates who escaped from prison in Pocahontas County early Sunday morning.

Thomas Pennington, 40, of Kanawha County and Larry Morehead, 48, of Nicholas County escaped from Denmar Correctional Facility around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to First Sergeant Michael Baylous. They were discovered missing early Sunday morning during a regular check, according to Warden Mark Williamson. Baylous said Pennington was serving a sentence for murder and sexual assault and Morehead was serving a sentence for sexual assault.

Prison officials believe the inmates scaled a chain-link fence at the rear of the prison, according to Williamson. There is razor wire at both the top and bottom of the fence.

Electronic message boards along Interstate 64 in Raleigh, Summers and Greenbrier counties are warning motorists not to pick up hitchhikers.

The West Virginia Department of Corrections provided descriptions for each of the escaped inmates. Pennington is described as a 5-foot-11-inch white male with brown hair and blue eyes, weighing about 190 pounds. Morehead is described as a 5-foot-8-inch white male with blonde hair and blue eyes, weighing about 225 pounds.

Director of Greenbrier County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Al Whitaker recommended folks in the area should keep their homes and cars locked.

Dispatchers said State Police, Pocahontas Sheriff's Department, West Virginia Natural Resources Department and West Virginia Department of Corrections are investigating this incident.
