WEIRTON - Cigarette smokers in Weirton will now have to light up somewhere other than municipal parks.
The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation established the new smoke-free policy at its July meeting, citing health risks, especially on children, associated with secondhand smoke. They also considered the litter that goes along with the habit.
Recreation Director Terry Weigel said the policy stems from the Board's belief that it has a responsibility to protect patrons who visit its attractions.
