WELCH - McDowell County officials are working to get funding for an expansion at the Stevens Correctional Center in Welch.  They want to house an additional 144 inmates, adding to the current capacity of about 322.  The project is estimated to cost around $4 million, and the McDowell County Economic Development Authority recently acquired a structure behind the prison for the expansion.  The county currently manages the prison per an agreement with the state.
