Tractor trailer erupts in flames

HINTON - A tractor trailer en route from Baltimore erupted in flames Friday afternoon, but the driver escaped unharmed.

It all happened just before 1:15 p.m. on I-64 East near mile marker 140, according to firefighters. The driver pulled over when he noticed the truck was smoking and when he left the vehicle, flames erupted from under the hood.

The fire started because the tractor trailer blew an engine, according to Chief Tom Scott of the Green Sulphur District Volunteer Fire Department. Scott said extinguishing an engine fire can be risky. "Water doesn't do too much and with these engines [and with] what they're made out of now, you just have to be very careful," he explained.

The Division of Highways is investigating this incident.
