OAK HILL - One might agree that someone who lives to be 80 years old lived a full life. If that is true then a local man is living a full life, and some. Leonard Thompson celebrates his 100th birthday.

"I never had no idea that I would live to be 100 years old," said Thompson.

In the last 100 years, the National Football League was formed, women gained rights and the empire state buidling was built. Leonard Thompson, who is celebrating his 100th birthday lived through all of it.

"My favorite memories is, well growing up. The ups and downs," said Thompson.

Some of those ups and downs included the great depression.

"During the depression times were hard. I got to work about four days a week and started out making forty cents an hour," said Thompson.

Surrounded by friends and family of four generations, they say they are thankful to have him in their lives.

"We are thankful for being able to celebrate 100 years. He's had a wonderful life, he worked on the railroads still living in the same house he's lived in for 60 something years he's never lived outside of Fayette county," said Thompson's daughter, Dorothy Arnold.

The secret to life has yet to be determined, but Thompson says he has a pretty good idea.

"My secret to all these years is the good lord that let me live to be 100 years old. I had a good wife that looked after me," said Thompson.

His grandsons joke about having more gray hair than he does, but he says he's just happy to cross the milestone.

"So here I am today. 100 years old."
