Heavy rain leads to flooding in Mabscott

MABSCOTT - Several areas across southern West Virginia are experiencing flooding and downed trees from  heavy rain.

Mabscott is just one of many towns dealing with floods. Firefighters said it began raining there around 9:30 p.m. Monday and continued through most of Tuesday, leading to higher water accumulations along certain streets.

More than ten calls were placed to the fire department Monday night regarding water in the road, downed trees and other issues. One family even had to be rescued from their house.

Residents said the area could have been hit a lot worse. "It's better than I expected," said Muriel Tillman of Beckley. "With this much rain, it often is just covered with water."

Captain Ray Palmer of the Mabscott Fire Department said cleanup can take hours, so he said he is fortunate most of the work is done. Palmer said firefighters spent the day cleaning up debris and trying to clear flooded areas.
