WHITESVILLE - An out-of-state church group that's been traveling to Whitesville for 21 years is helping with the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group's Coal Heritage Riverwalk Project.

About 50 teenagers and 25 adults form the St. Aquinas Catholic Church in Georgia participate in a mission trip that helps repair homes along the Big Coal River.  This summer, the group is also building two picnic pavilions on the site of the former public pool near the Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial.  This week they are constructing the roofs for both pavilions.

Thursday night, the volunteers will join the community in celebrating West Virginia's 150th birthday with a cook out and concert in the park.  Hot dogs and cake will be served from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
