BECKLEY - Dozens of folks in Raleigh County learned how to be prepared when disaster strikes.

The quarterly meeting of the Southern West Virginia Preparedness Partnership was held Wednesday at the Raleigh County Commission on Aging for the general public and members of emergency services.

Officials discussed how to be aware of important alerts using the news, social media and other information outlets. Folks also learned how to put emergency kits together.

Kevin Taylor, director of Emergency Services in Beckley, explained people should always be prepared because weather makes an impact everyday. "Preparation is key," Taylor said. "And there's a lot of steps we can take in order to lessen the effects of those events. We can't prevent them, but we can prepare."
