THURMOND - An uninhabited house in Thurmond caught fire Friday evening, after a nearby utility pole fell onto a power line.

It happened after 4:30 p.m., according to firefighters. No word on what cause the pole to snap and fall. A small fire erupted at the corners of the house, but there was only external damage.

Oak Hill and Mount Hope Fire Departments responded to the scene, as well as park rangers.

Mount Hope Assistant Fire Chief Richard Smith said the departments responded quickly, especially considering the back roads to get there. "We were just minutes from leaving but takes a long time to get here. It's still a good distance away from both departments.
