CHARLESTON - A new labor union report showed that 43 West Virginia workers were killed on the job in 2011, down from 2010 when 95 people were killed including the 29 men who died in the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster.
According to the report by the AFL-CIO, there were 4,693 workplace deaths across the country in 2011. That number was down by only three people from the year prior.
The union said that after years of steady declines, rates have been essentially unchanged. Officials said that means greater efforts are needed to reduce job injuries and deaths.
