CHARLES TOWN - Senator Jay Rockefeller is seeking to get one West Virginia veteran the recognition he believes is long overdue.  The Mountain State senator has sent President Obama a letter requesting presidential commendation for 92-year-old Charles Town resident Frederick Mayer.  Mayer is a German-born Jew who fled to the U.S. and joined the Army to fight the Nazis.  He was captured and tortured by the Gestapo, but later helped negotiate the surrender of Innsbruck in 1945.  Rockefeller says Mayer deserves recognition for his selfless patriotism.
