WILLIAMSON - A prosecutor said the suspect in the fatal shooting of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was legally prohibited from owning a gun.

County Prosecutor Michael Sparks declined to identify where Tennis Maynard, 37, bought the gun, but Sparks said, "It appears that the system didn't work." Sparks also declied to elaborate on why Maynard was banned from owning one.  Maynard's father has said that his son had mental problems and that he had previously been in an institution.

Sheriff Eugene Crum was gunned down in broad daylight on April 3 as he ate lunch in a downtown Williamson parking lot.
