Mingo County Sheriff shot, killed

WILLIAMSON- Mingo County's Sheriff Eugene Crum was killed in the line of duty.

Around noon Wednesday Crum went to his usual spot in a parking lot to eat lunch, in Williamson about one block from the Mingo County Courthouse when he was shot and killed. State Police say the man suspected of gunning down Crum is 37-year-old Tennis Melvin Maynard. State Police Captain David Nelson said Maynard crashed into a bridge held up a gun as he got out of the vehicle and was shot. Maynard was taken to a local hospital and reported to be in surgery earlier this evening.

WILLIAMSON - Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was fatally shot and a suspect is in custody.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin's Chief of Staff Rob Aslop said state police told the Governor that Crum died after he was shot Wednesday.  Aslop also said that the suspect was shot too and taken to a hospital in Logan.  Mingo County Office of Emergency Services Head Dispatcher Willis Spense said that the shooting happened in Williamson within a block of the Mingo County Courthouse.  The courthouse is closed.

A news conference is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night.
