Easter flower deliveries number to hundreds at Bessie's Floral Designs

OAK HILL - The day before Easter is usually a very busy time for flower shops.

Barbara Halstenberg, owner of Bessie's Floral Designs Incorporated in Oak Hill, described Saturday's deliveries as "hectic." Halstenberg explained Easter flower orders pile in every year, so she starts planning for the influx two months ahead.

"It's mathematics and planning, organizing," she said. "And if you get those three entities together, you're going to have a good day."

About 500 flower arrangements were delivered Saturday, but Halstenberg said Easter is not their busiest holiday. She explained Easter comes behind Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and Christmas.

Halstenberg's daughter Melissa Thomas, who drives a flower delivery truck for Bessie's, said the pressure of getting Saturday's deliveries in on time "so that you don't ruin {the families'} day" is what kept her going. "I know that if I go to that home, I'm making someone happy," she said. "And that's what I'm here for, is to make someone happy."

Thomas said the customers' appreciation helps keep her going during hectic holiday seasons.
