BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Concord University women's track and field athlete Shawnee Carnett earned the right to compete for a national title after winning her preliminary race in the 800-meter run at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Carnett won the second of three preliminary races in the 800-meters with a time of 2:10.92. The top two times in each preliminary race as well as the next two fastest times advanced to Saturday's national championship race.
The Sugar Grove, Va. native was biding her time in the middle of the six-woman field for much of the race before exploding to the front of the pack in the final lap to secure the victory and automatically advance to the finals.
Carnett, a former outdoor 800-meter national championship, will look to win her second NCAA title when the championship race gets underway 6:00 p.m. EST on Saturday.
