GHENT - The New River Community and Technical College Advanced Technology Center in Ghent is hosting a four-day advanced tire instructor course this week.

The classes cover many aspects about tires, including tire construction, maintenance and sizing. Those who successfully complete the course will be nationally certified to teach it to others.

James Blair, automotive instructor at New River, said the course is geared toward tire shops with multiple locations. "They can certify one of their technicians as an instructor," Blair explained, "And then he or she can go train the other technicians at their various stores to get them certified."

Technical Service Trainer Brenden McCormick of Jack Williams Tire and Auto Service Centers in Pennsylvania said he plans on teaching the course to his technicians at all 27 locations. "We're looking at a level of consistency in our training for not only the industry standard, but also for our customer base, he said. "The more consistent level of training we get our technicians, obviously the more consistent and the better service they'll give our customers."

Eight students are taking the 32-hour course. Those who pass will receive a badge and certificate. For more information on when the class will be offered next, contact Blair at 304-929-3317.
