LEWISBURG - Early voting has begun for Greenbrier County's proposed fire levy. If the levy passes, the money will be distributed to fire departments throughout the county for equipment and other upgrades. This would mean a tax increase of four cents per $100 for class I property, eight cents for class II, and 16 cents for class III and class IV property. For example, if you own a $100,000 home and two vehicles valued at $25,000 total, you would pay about $72 in additional taxes every year. Fire officials say this levy is necessary to keep smaller departments from closing, and therefore keep emergency response time at a minimum.
