State police are investigating the death of a two-year-old boy in Fairdale who they say showed signs of physical abuse.
Police say the toddler's 23-year-old step-father, James Green, has been arrested for murder and the boy's mother, Brandy Smallwood, for Child Neglect Resulting in Death.
Police say two troopers responded to the 911 call Friday night and found the child had been carried to a neighbor's house by his stepfather. There the stepfather was found unresponsive from an apparent drug overdose. Both he and the child were taken to hospitals, but the toddler died early Saturday morning.
The child's twin brother is currently with child protective services.
State police say this incident speaks to the prescription drug epidemic in West Virginia.
"This speaks to what this epidemic is capable of doing, what it will make one human being do to another human being," said Sgt. D. W. Bennett.
Officials say the other twin brother also showed signs of physical abuse. The investigation is ongoing.

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child in Fairdale.
According to a news release, two troopers from the Beckley detachment responded Friday night to a 911 call that the child had fallen from the window of a house trailer. When troopers arrived, the child had been carried to a neighbor's house by the child's stepfather. He was found unresponsive from an apparent drug overdose.
The child was taken to a hospital where the toddler died early Saturday. A preliminary investigation indicates the child died from shaking, not from a fall from the window.
No arrest has been made.
The 23-year-old stepfather was also hospitalized.
