SOPHIA - An early morning fire in Raleigh County burned the Gospel Truth Lighthouse Church in Sophia to the ground.
The fire started before 12:30 Sunday morning, according to firefighters. The church was fully engulfed in flames when seven local fire departments arrived. Firefighters were on the scene for about five hours.
Zach Honaker, assistant fire chief of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, said so many departments were dispatched not only because the fire was severe, but also because the weather slowed their response time. "Just like a hot summer day, a cold winter night, cold winter morning
can take the same effect on a fireman if they're fighting a fire," he said. "So the
more help you got, the better."
No one was inside the church at the time of the fire. Sophia City Fire Department is investigating this incident.
