Bank Robber Pleads Guilty on Three Counts

A man arrested after robbing a bank with a bomb pleads guilty in Raleigh County court.

Vernon Channell, 53,  pleaded guilty to three counts Thursday after robbing a City National Bank in Beckley on October 7, in 2010. 

Channell said he gave a teller a note demanding money and told her he had a a bomb, which police found later and detonated. Channell was arrested a day later in Charleston and was found with the money.

Thursday he plead guilty to First Degree Robbery, Possession of a Destructive Device and Wanton Endangerment of Destructive Device. Channell faces 12 years in the penitentiary for robbery than no more than ten years on the other two charges.  He will also have to pay back City National Bank the money he stole.

Channell remains in Southern Regional Jail where his bond has been revoked.
