Voters will decide on another proposed fire levy next year. This time in Greenbrier County.
The County Commission approved a measure to put the levy up for a vote next March. Rainelle Vol. Fire Chief Shawn Wolford says the $2 million levy is needed to keep up with rising insurance, equipment, and training costs.
"We've seen insurance in some departments go up as much as 800 to 900 percent, Rainelle being one of those, and that was workers comp," he says. "We've seen regular insurance go up, in addition to fuel, equipment, mandated training needs."
The proposed levy is modeled after ones in Fayette and Raleigh counties. If approved, it would start on July 1st, 2013.
