SANDSTONE MOUNTAIN – An early morning tractor trailer accident on the interstate sent the driver to the hospital.

The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident around 4 a.m. Friday on I-64 in the Sandstone Mountain area.

Officers said a freightliner hauling steel on a flatbed trailer was traveling eastbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle and used the emergency escape ramp. The vehicle came to a stop at the end of the ramp, which caused the load to shift forward, strike the cab of the vehicle and dislodge it from the frame.

The extent of the driver’s injuries is unknown.
