BECKLEY – Take a drive through Beckley during rush hour and it might take you all night, but in a few years traffic will look much different.
The Beckley bypass is close to getting a big addition. The Z-way project will stretch from Stanaford Road, behind Lowes and Wal-Mart, cross Ragland Road, and connect to Robert C. Byrd.
Not only will this make access to schools and the hospital easier, but officials say easing the flow of traffic on Eisenhower Drive will be a boost for local business too.
“In an area that was so congested with traffic before, (businesses) were not even looking at moving into that area,” says Beckley-Raleigh County Transportation Authority Chairperson, William Baker,
“Now with part of that bypass open, alleviating a lot of that traffic, a lot of people are looking at our Pinecrest Technology Park which is right off the bypass.”
Construction should get underway within the month, and Baker doesn't expect too many disruptions to the current flow of traffic.
The project should be complete by the spring of 2016.
