SMITHERS - A Smithers man was arrested on a felony drug charge following a traffic stop in Fayette County.

Jeremy Louis Bufford, 34, is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The driver of the vehicle, Alicia Conliffe, was cited for not having insurance and for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

An officer stopped the vehicle on U.S. Route 60 in the Smithers area around 8 p.m. Tuesday for an equipment violation, according to Sheriff Steve Kessler. Prior to the K-9 drug search, Conliffe reportedly admitted to possessing a small amount of marijuana.

The officer searched Bufford after noticing the suspect attempt to conceal something in his shoe, according to Kessler. The officer reportedly found a bag hidden in the suspect's shoe containing approximately 55 30-milligram Oxycodone pills, and also found more than $1,500 in Bufford's pocket.

Bufford is in Southern Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.
