Man arrested for accidentally setting fire to Matoaka apartments Friday, police say

MATOAKA - The man police say is responsible for a Mercer County apartment fire is in custody Friday night. 

Brandon Coomes, 29, was arrested for third-degree arson and breaking without entering, according to the Matoka Police Department. 

He will be transported to Bluefield for holding and then arraigned Saturday morning. 

The charges stem from a large apartment fire in downtown Matoaka. The apartments were part of a former hotel and currently being renovated. 

Coomes was linked to the crime through witness statements. Police told WOAY that Coomes set the blaze accidentally.
