RALEIGH COUNTY - Alpha Natural Resources is announcing plans to possibly downsize mining operations in West Virginia.

The Bristol, Virginia company said Thursday that employees at eight of its affiliates in the Mountain State were notified they are "subject to being idled" due to weak market conditions and government regulations.

The change could affect 1,100 employees at 11 surface mines and plants. The mines which may experience layoffs include Alex Energy's Edwight Surface Mine in Raleigh County and Republic Energy's Republic and Workman Creek Surface Mines in Raleigh County.

There's also Pioneer Fuel's Ewing Fork #1 Surface Mine in Kanawha and Fayette counties. Company officials expect the layoffs could happen by mid October.
