CHARLESTON - Repairs are complete at the
East River Mountain Tunnel, according to officials.
The Virginia Department of
Transportation (DOT) was able to complete its repairs of the East River
Mountain Tunnel overnight, according to Carrie Bly with the West Virginia DOT.
The northbound tunnel had been
scheduled to be closed Wednesday night through Thursday morning, but it will
remain open. The West Virginia DOT assisted the Virginia DOT with repairs.
A tractor trailer fire on Friday
afternoon had led to closures of the tunnel's northbound lanes for more than 18

northbound lanes of the interstate tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday,
July 29 through 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, then again from 8 p.m. Wednesday,
July 30 through 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, according to Carrie Bly with the West Virginia
Department of Transportation says. Bly said northbound traffic will be piloted
through the southbound side of the tunnel through a rolling stop, allowing both
sides of traffic to alternate.
The West Virginia Department of
Transportation is assisting the Virginia Department of Transportation with
repairs. Travelers should expect heavy delays.
The northbound lanes of the tunnel had
initially been closed for more than 18 hours following Friday afternoon's fire.
