THURMOND- A Fayette County town is celebrating its railroad heritage today.
The town of Thurmond held its first annual railroad days. The town wants to make the event an annual celebration. Thurmond was once one of the booming rail towns in the state. People at the event toured the surrounding area to see what made Thurmond one of the top rail towns around. Another aspect of the event was rail safety, which teaches people how to be safer near railroads.
"I think it's a great opportunity for the town to host something like this because even though it may be small this year, I think it's going to continue to grow. More and more people will be showing up here for railroad days," said John Perry.
"It has helped build the gorge and build this town so it's fun to look back at that story and see how that has made a difference in the cultural heritage if this area," said Jodi Fench-Burr.
Tours and hiking were highlights of the celebration.
