WELCH - The McDowell County Sheriff's Department made an arrest Wednesday night, after the subject attempted to harm the arresting officer.

37 year old Joseph Darnell Braggs of Northfolk was arrested Wednesday night by the McDowell County Sheriff's Department on several charges including domestic battery, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. A deputy responded to the scene of a domestic violence call and after arriving at the home, Braggs attempted to attack the officer and placed his hand on a knife hidden in his shirt. A short altercation ensued and it was then that the deputy drew his pistol and detained the subject. Braggs has been arraigned and posted $5,00 bail.

Sheriff Martin West said, "It happens a lot mostly because of drugs or alcohol involved when people are not in their normal process of life and they're being influenced by illegal substances most of the time or alcohol. If they're in a domestic situation they're combative anyway because of the tension I suppose that's been going on."

West said his officers are trained to handle situations such as this, as resisting arrest is a common offense.
