BECKLEY - Athletes of all kinds of will descend on Raleigh County this weekend to compete for bragging rights and set new records.
David Chinn of CrossFit Beckley and Waylon Payne of AFC CrossFit are teaming up to host the Coalfield War Games Saturday.
The event includes a 5K, CrossFit WOD and bar fight. The fight will be the first sanctioned event in the state and includes a deadlift, squat and bench press.
Those who aren’t participating can come as a spectator for the food and live music. Chinn and Payne hope the event will unite athletes with common interests.
“You're going to have runners who might want to know a little bit about CrossFit, CrossFit tell them a little about running -- same with the weightlifting,” Chinn said. “CrossFitters are starting to lift heavier weights now, so it's kind of a good combination to get all of these people together to see what they're doing that works for them, and of course what's not working for them.”
“You're going to meet people and have either the interest of weightlifting, or running or CrossFitting,” Payne said. “It's the first time that I've been in on something where they bring all of it together other than the Arnold Classic, so it's going to be pretty interesting. It's going to be pretty fun.”
The games are set for Saturday at the Skyline Resort in Ghent. The 5K is the first event and is set to begin at 9 a.m.
