BECKLEY – A tree falls Tuesday afternoon in Raleigh County and crushes a vehicle parked underneath.

Traffic in Beckley was interrupted and power shut off to one neighborhood Tuesday when a tree fell on an SUV just after 1 p.m.

According to first responders no one was in the vehicle when a tree fell at the corner of Second St. and Woodlawn Ave. near downtown.

The tree fell on a high voltage power line and emergency personnel were waiting for the power company to assess the situation before cleaning up. But that's not the only concern for them.

“Part of the tree overhangs a building adjacent,” says Beckley Fire Chief, Billie Trump, “We went down and notified the people that an unexpected collapse of the tree happened. That there's a significant amount of the tree overhanging their building, and we don't know how stable it is.”

The accident was just a block away from the Beckley Fire Dept. and officials were on scene minutes after it happened.
