HINTON - A couple who settled in Hinton is on its way to completing a trek from Georgia to Maine.

John Vuolo, 60, also known as "J5," is a retired Navy vet and active member of the Hinton Area Board of Directors.

He, his wife Beth, who earned the trail name "Dragon Lady," and a high school friend named "Captain Jake" began hiking the Appalachian Trail in March and reached West Virginia in early June.

The entire journey is documented on TrailJournals, where Vuolo posts photos and updates.

But 15 miles a day put a toll on Beth's feet, and she now is following the route in a pickup truck, according to Hinton attorney David Ziegler.

Ziegler has known Vuolo for five years. He told Newswatch the 60-year-old is in excellent shape.

"The one day that I hiked with him, I was impressed that everybody else that was hiking the trails seemed to know him, and everybody was getting along and having a good time," Ziegler said. "He's a friendly, intelligent ambitious man."

Vuolo is accepting pledges for each mile he walks. That information and the mission of the Hinton Area Foundation are available online.
