FAYETTEVILLE - A local Maurices is collecting school supplies for foster children going back to school in the fall.
With the sale of each backpack, a foster child will receive a new cinch sac full of school and hygiene supplies. The project started by Jennifer Smith is called "Project Fostering Self-Esteem." The store has set a goal of giving away 31 backpacks to foster children. Smith talks about why the project is important to her.
"It just breaks my heart. I have three kids. Just to know that kids get dropped off needing foster care with nothing but the clothes on their back, not even a tooth brush to their name. It just breaks my heart and I just want each kid to have an equal chance at success in life," said Smith.
"Here at Maurices, we're taking donations to help Jennifer Smith till the 31 sacs. We're taking up school supplies and hygiene donations, like pencils, paper, glue, deodorant, toothbrushes," said Ashley Jones.
You can make donations at the Fayetteville Maurices until August 3rd.
