BECKLEY – Raleigh County kids are kicking it this summer, playing the most popular sport in the world.

The 2nd annual YMCA Youth soccer camp kicks off Monday at the Beckley soccer complex. They expect close to 90 kids to join and learn the fundamentals of the game.

They'll work throughout the week on dribbling, passing, shooting, and wrap things up on Thursday and Friday with competitions and scrimmages.

Assistant program director, Jason Logan says this is a big year with the game being playing on such a big stage.

“This being a World Cup year it adds to the attraction of the soccer camp, I'm sure. Plus, it helps promote the sport. With the U.S. team doing do well this year, a lot of people that might be casual fans (are) watching the game.”

It's not too late to sign up, either. Seven to 12 year-olds will go from 9 a.m. to noon, and 11 to 14 year-olds from 2 to 5 p.m. Just show up at the Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex to register.
