Triple-A travel projects 41 million Americans journied 50 miles or more during the independence day holiday weekend, which comes to an end today.
That is a one point nine percent increase from the 40.3 million people who traveled last year and a nearly 14% increase compared to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The majority of travelers will be celebrating their freedom with a road trip. More than eight in 10 choose to travel by car, the highest level since 2007. Newswatch caught up with several out-of-towners stopping through Beckley today.
"It's been an excellent drive. Wonderful country roads. Nice weather" said travelers from New York City.
"It's peaceful. Coast down the road, listen to the radio. Just go unless you deal with heavy traffic like now" said Joe Spano.
"I've been sleeping most of the time so... There's no traffic or anything" said Oscar Marchi.
Roads should return back to normal Monday.
