WELCH - A North Carolina man is behind bars after allegedly stealing an ambulance and trying to steal a dirt bike in McDowell County.

Sheriff Martin West said Deputy K. Wright responded to an assault complaint received Sunday around 5:15 a.m. in the Northfork area when he learned Steven Allen Goins, 33, of East Bend, N.C. had tried to steal a dirt bike before the bike's owner found him. Goins allegedly dropped the dirt bike and fled the scene, traveling to downtown Northfork and stealing an ambulance belonging to Widners Ambulance Service.

Wright found Goins and the ambulance in the Keystone area, according to West. Goins was arrested and charged with grand larceny, attempt to commit a felony, DUI and misdemeanor destruction of property. He is in Southwestern Regional Jail on $20,000 bond.
