McCONNELL - A Welch mother and son were killed in a two-vehicle accident Friday on Route 10 near McConnell in Logan County.

Rita Overbee, 53, and Robert Overbee, 28, were trapped inside their vehicle after the 7:45 a.m. crash and had to be extricated by members of the Logan County Fire Department, according to a news release from the Logan County Sheriff’s Department. They were taken to the Logan Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.

Witnesses said Rita Overbee was driving a car north on Route 10 at a high rate of speed and failed to slow down when she entered a curve. Her vehicle then crossed the center line and into the pathway of a southbound pickup truck, and the vehicles collided, deputies said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Ernest Jewell II, 25, of Lenore, received minor injuries and was taken to the Logan Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.

Deputies said the crash is still under investigation.
